Abyss Adventures Chapter 1

Hello, This is HCHH, Thank you for checking this out. This first chapter is told from the perspective of one of the main characters, Calypso.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I walked out into the chilly summer morning. It was the start of another school week today. It was already 8:30, so I called out to my sister, Aaryn, and I asked her to come out, seeing as we were nearly late for school.
“Coming,” Aaryn, my sister,  yelled in reply.
“You don’t want to be late, do you?” I shout back at her.
I decided to go on without her, walking down the street, knowing she would catch up to me later on. I walked towards the school we went to, Lune Middle School, half expecting my sister to smack me on the back while running past me. Unluckily, my expectations weren’t betrayed, and I was whacked on the back by my sister, while she ran past me. The streets were dim, although the streetlights were on, but I could still make out my sister’s features. She has long brown hair, tied into a ponytail behind her, and bright, enthusiastic blue eyes. Walking along the street with me, I felt an odd sense of happiness, maybe just knowing that I was here with a member of my family made me happy.
“Cal, is something wrong, you seem a bit weird today?” my sister questions me.
“No, why’d you ask?”
“No reason.”
I ponder why she would’ve asked such a question, when I see Andrew, my best friend whom we also called Drew, walking in front of us.He looked germanic in his features, and had short blonde hair that would stay facing the sky, making him look even larger than the giant he already was. Looking towards my sister, I saw that she and I had the same thought in mind. I decided to ask her for input before going on ahead.
“On three?”
She nodded in response.
“three…”
“two…”
“one…”
We both ran up and gave Andrew heavy whacks on the back, while he yelped in surprise. He must’ve been really scared, as he looked out of breath, raggedly huffing and puffing for air. After seeing his reaction to our little pre-halloween scare, my sister and I burst into laughter, while he made a scorn expression at us.
“Seriously… you two are just like two peas in a pod!” he yelled at us twins in exasperation, although he knew that it wouldn’t do any good.
“That expression on your face, though!” I replied, half laughing whilst doing so.
“Yeah! Now that, that was priceless!” my sister added, managing to calm her laughter.
“You seriously shouldn’t have done that! I nearly got a heart attack!”
“Yeah, we know, we know.”
Although I say that, I am sure that my sister and I don’t know, or more likely, we just don’t care about what he says, seeing as we got a good laugh out of what happened with Drew just now, and we would probably do it again, if given the chance to.
We had nearly reached the school, and we could see it in the distance. Lune Mid is one of the more famous schools in the district, and it is a private school for students in the area. There were all sorts of people in this city, the city of Amber, a place with a small population of only 30,000 people, so it is a quiet peaceful place. Our school, being a private school, had elites, and other amazing, extremely unique students attending.
Walking in to the school, we went our separate ways at our lockers, to our different first period classes. I was heading towards Science, my first period class. Science was one of my worst classes, and I saw Elissa, a friend of Aaryn,  on the way to Science.
“Good Morning, Lissa,” I greeted her as I passed by.
“Ah, good morning, Cal.”
“So, how was your weekend?”
“It was uneventful, as usual. How about you? Did something fun happen?”
“Well, we scared Drew this morning, so I guess you can’t call it completely uneventful.”
“Ah, you siblings really shouldn’t be scaring Drew so much.”
“I know, but we can’t help it, he’s just that easy to scare, and his reaction’s great”
“Even so…” she droned on about how scaring people like that wasn’t a good thing to do.
I guess you can say that she is mature, but those who know her know that she is actually quite a crybaby when it comes to certain things.
When we finally got to the science classroom, everyone inside was frozen, not moving at all, looking like there were realistic statues of every person there, frozen in a real world scenario. Elissa and I went around, checking if they were playing a prank on us, and sure enough, they weren’t. Elissa looked a bit concerned, so I decided to try and soothe her, seeing as she was Aaryn’s friend.
“It’ll be alright, something is wrong, but I’m sure it’ll all work out somehow.”
“You’re right. It’ll all work out.”
I felt a bit calmer after seeing her calm down, and I decided to think logically. I looked at our surroundings, but it seemed like nothing was wrong. After looking around a bit more, Elissa suddenly spoke out, “Do you think time’s stopped?”
“...”
“I think it looks like this,” she started.
“How does it look like time has stopped?”
“Well, let’s start with how the clock isn’t ticking right now.”
“Hmm… Good point, and with everyone frozen, if we aren’t in an alternate dimension or something, the only explanation would be that time has stopped.”
“Well, now that we’ve decided that, what do we do now?”
She seemed to be looking towards me for leadership, and I decided to try my best to deliver even though I had never been placed in a leader role in a situation like this.
“Well, why don’t we see if anyone else is also in this situation for the moment?”
“Okay... “
She looks like she is waiting for me to go first, so I slowly walk out the door, being cautious. When I walked out the door, I came across something I never thought I would come across in the real world, but I have actually come across one now. The stature of this being may have been short, but I felt an aura as fierce as a wild beast, coming from this small green creature. I immediately put a label on it in my mind. Goblin, I thought.
“Be careful, it’s a goblin,” I whispered to Elissa as I locked the door behind me.
“What’s a goblin?” she questioned this new word being thrown at her.
“Well, to be honest, it’s a mythical green midget humanoid monster. That’s the best way I can describe it,” I explained carefully, trying not to confuse or scare her.
“Ah, so it’s a demon-thingy.”
“Yeah.. I guess you could say that as well,” I responded, while sighing in exasperation.
She was really hopeless when it came to these things, I thought. After recovering from her comment, I started looking around for a weapon, something I could use to defend Elissa from the goblin, while making sure I don’t get injured too much either. I saw something that would be perfect, or as perfect as I could find in a school: a light metal pole. I took it out of it’s socket, which was holding it up. Not knowing what it was used for, I wielded it around as a sword, swinging it around a few times before using it as a sword.
“Follow after me,” I tell her, while holding the metal pole in an upright position.
“...okay,” she responded.
I think she was a bit scared of me, seeing as I had a weapon in my hand. I think anyone in their right mind would be scared of me right now, seeing the bloodshot expression in my eyes. Adrenaline was flowing inside of me, and I burst out of the door. Wielding the metal pole in my hand, I slashed at the goblin from behind. You may think that what I did was wrong, but the goblin was surely stronger than Elissa and I combined.
I whacked him across the head, and he squelched out in pain. I felt Elissa flinch behind me. I don’t know what it was, but it must’ve been the adrenaline, because I instantly jabbed the metal pole into the goblin’s heart, and ripped it out just as quickly. I turned around, and saw that Elissa was trembling with fear, I proceeded to soothe her once again, but perceived that she wasn’t scared of the dead goblin corpse, lying motionlessly on the floor; but me, the one who slayed the demon, the so-called “hero”. I was confused at first, but I then noticed that my face was splattered with purple goblin blood, looking as scary as any of those serial killers you saw on tv, right after a murder.
“Oh, don’t worry,” I state, as I deny her worries while wiping the blood off with my sleeve.
“...Is everything okay, Cal? You seem really weird today, like you’re not yourself.”
“First Aaryn, now you? I’m perfectly normal today. How am I any different from usual?”
“Okay… if you say so, Cal.”
First Aaryn, now her. I’m pretty sure I didn’t change from before, and I’m perfectly sure I’m completely normal. I was just protecting us when killing the goblin, and nothing about my physical appearance has really changed. It must be something about them. Well, I shouldn’t be thinking about that sort of stuff in this situation anyways.
“Let’s go see if anyone else is like this,” I suggested, while waiting for her response.
“Okay… let’s go. Seeing as this is happening to you, it’s probably also happening to Aaryn as well, seeing as you two are two peas in a pod.”
“Yeah… that’s probably true.”

Normally, I would’ve denied it, but in this dangerous situation, I couldn’t. It was too much of a possibility. With Elissa in tow behind me, I walked off to the Math classroom, half-preparing for a fight.
